Artist Bio
Henny Verhoeven is a white settler queer femme multimedia artist using textiles, illustration, tattooing and multimedia instillations to create dark and whimsical worlds. With a BFA in textiles and fashion from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University; Verhoeven’s work is craft based and explores themes of seasons, dream worlds, queer healing, mental health, transient lifestyles, plants, myths and legends and the great unknown. Materials are made from scratch, scavenged or ethically sourced as ecological awareness and care is vital to the essence of Verhoeven’s inspiration and aesthetic.
As a decendant of settlers on this land, I am grateful for the chance to make my living off my work, to acknowledge and $pay$ tribute to the BIPOC , Trans, Queer folks who came before and who’s land I live and who’s knowledge and practices have been colonized/institutionalized/privatized, it is my responsibility to give back. I believe in donating to local organizations/ mutual aid funds/ grassroots community led programs/ BIPOC + QT2S BIPOC specific support and financial aid when financially possible. I am always open to donating work to fundraisers and raffles that are working towards environmental/racial/gender equity /progress. if you are organization such an event please email me.
I have two discount codes available to anyone who self identifies with the any of the following groups. My work is a tactile map of places, people, creatures, plants and experiences that have shaped my path, Physical relics of diving into the creative mind and process. I follow my curiosity and allow the pieces to come together naturally from a combination of science, art theory, intuition and lived experience. Sometime drawing from the ethereal in between of dreams and day dreams into the physical. Using any medium that lends itself to the image in my mind or reacting to and enhancing the beauty and wonder of natural materials in their raw form. I enjoy finding the through lines that connect at the centre of craft and making throughout different mediums. I believe that pursuing many disciplines makes for more interesting and multifaceted work and impact.
I am a maker, an observer, and forever a student
